Georgia Conservancy: Tender Giants

A proof-of-concept photography and film initiative focused on North Atlantic right whales in Georgia’s calving grounds.

Status: Pre-production and permitting

HCF Support: $5,000 Challenge Grant

Project Phase: Phase I proof of concept

Expected Start: January 2027

Project Development

Tender Giants is a multi-year conservation photography and film initiative led by National Geographic Explorers Jennifer Berglund and Brian Skerry. Phase I will test whether North Atlantic right whale mothers and calves can be documented underwater ethically and safely within an approved scientific and regulatory framework.

What HCF is Supporting

HCF committed a $5,000 challenge grant through Georgia Conservancy to help build early momentum and unlock at least $5,000 in additional philanthropic support. The grant supports Phase I planning, production, outreach, and the development of scientifically coordinated methods for potential underwater documentation.

What Comes Next

The team is advancing permitting, scientific design, fundraising, vessel coordination, and expedition planning with NOAA Fisheries, Georgia DNR, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and other partners. Fieldwork is planned for the January 2027 calving season, subject to permitting, conditions, and animal behavior.

Updates and outcomes will be added as the project reaches defined milestones.
